Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas with a mild sweet odour and taste. When inhaled in small amounts, the gas produces euphoria, sometimes laughter. For this reason, nitrous oxide is also called laughing gas. Usually, nitrous oxide is artificially produced by heating solid ammonium nitrate.

In medicine and dentistry, nitrous oxide is used as a weak analgesic. The gas is also used to maintain surgical anaesthesia with other anaesthetic agents and muscle relaxants.
It is also used in making particular canned pressurized food, such as instant whipped cream. In automobile racing, nitrous oxide is injected into an engine’s air intake. This increases oxygen, thereby allowing the engine to burn more fuel at a time, boosting the speed.
